BDDK revokes operating license of Iran-based Bank Mellat

Under a decision dated September 18 published in the Official Gazette, the operating license of Bank Mellat's Istanbul Türkiye Central Branch was revoked under Article 71/1-b of the Banking Law; according to DW and Euronews, the justification cited a threat to depositors' rights and the trust and stability of the financial system.

The decision was taken at the BDDK's meeting of September 18. Bank Mellat had branches in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir in Türkiye. The bank is also on the US sanctions list.
