Former Izmir Mayor Burhan Özfatura passes away

Former Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Burhan Özfatura passed away at age 83 at Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, where he was taken following sudden cardiac arrest. He served as mayor during the 1984–1989 and 1994–1999 terms.

Özfatura was fighting for his life in the cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş issued condolence messages. The deceased had also been a columnist for Türkiye newspaper.

20 Sept 2026 Former İzmir Mayor Özfatura in intensive care Burhan Özfatura, 83, was taken to Dokuz Eylül University Hospital after suffering sudden cardiac arrest at his home in Balçova. Chief Physician Emel Çalıkoğlu reported that he remains in critical condition, while his son Fatih Özfatura stated his heart stopped for approximately 40 minutes and he remains unconscious.
