Left Party, running with Elif Eralp, wins Berlin state election with 25.7%

In the German capital Berlin, the Left Party, nominating Turkish-origin Elif Eralp for mayor, won the state parliament election with 25.7% of the vote. According to provisional official results, the Left Party won 47 seats, the CDU 35, and the AfD 29; a coalition is required.

The CDU lost 9.5 points compared to the previous election, falling to 18.8 percent. The AfD increased its vote by 7.2 points, reaching its highest share in Berlin with 16.3 percent. Eralp said a woman of immigrant origin achieved this success for the first time in Berlin.
