Özgür Özel said the per-liter price of diesel would exceed 100 lira at midnight on September 16, with 20 lira of that coming from special consumption tax (ÖTV) and VAT. Özel called for fuel taxes to be removed immediately.
Özel noted that the 100-lira banknote issued in 2009 could buy 40 liters of diesel then, but only 1 liter today. He recalled that when Erdoğan announced the discovery of a daily 100,000 barrels of oil in Gabar before the 2023 elections, diesel was 20 lira per liter. He argued the price hike would be reflected on everything from fruit and vegetables to school buses.
